New Gallery

I am thrilled to announce that I will now be represented by CIRCA Gallery in Minneapolis. I have been a big fan of CIRCA for over 20 years, as they’ve consistently shown such strong contemporary abstract work. It is especially satisfying to circle back to connections with my first home. There is much gratitude to go around for this!

This is one of 15 works that are now available through them:

I am thrilled to share that my work was selected for Volume Twenty-Seven of Studio Visit Magazine by esteemed curator and critic Carl Belz. Studio Visit is a series of juried artist books, and each volume contains approximately 150 artists who have been selected by professional curators. It is published twice yearly, and is a sister publication to the annual New American Paintings.

I am grateful.

Peek a Boo, Encaustic + mixed media on panel, 16 x 16″, 2014, Ahavani Mullen

As part of a project between two encaustic groups, FUSEDChicago and New England Wax, artists from each group are creating works in response to each other in what we are calling The Diptych Project. I am working with Willa Vennema. Willa created 30 Days Free Trial pictured below on the left side. My panel Peek a Boo, the more solidly lime piece, was created in response, on the right side below. Each panel is 16 x 16″.

This project has been surprisingly delightful, and has forced me to stretch the ways that I work. I found myself playing with it as an exercise, as an exploration of new ways I can work out of my comfort zone. There is actually a comfort zone.

My work Peek a Boo, responds to Willa Vennama’s 30 Days Free Trial, from her Word Windows series. I was drawn to Willa’s exploration of shifting perspectives, depths and focus. Divided by right angles, and layered with pages from antique books, it speaks to the passing of and measurement of time. Peek a Boo responds to these shifts and explores the archaeology of her work through the layering of antique symphony scores with encaustic, navigating the seen and the unseen.

Thank you for collaborating, Willa. This has been an expansive experience.

Silence Speaks

I’d love to share some photos of the installation of Silence Speaks, my recent solo show at Morpho Gallery. Many thanks to all who showed up despite it being winter in Chicago. A very special thanks to my sister Bridget for her assistance with installation, as well as David Leigh at Morpho Gallery. So grateful to you both! Many good things have come as a result of this exhibition. Here are a few of my favorite shots:

New Workshops

Paint with Wax!

Encaustic Painting Workshops

Fall 2013

encaustic palette ahavani mullen

Explore the ancient art of encaustic painting using pigmented molten beeswax in this new series of workshops. Beeswax is perfect for a limitless number of mixed media projects, as it allows the artist to transfer images and combine other two- and three-dimensional objects with it. Beeswax can create a luminous, richly layered surface, which can be both transparent and opaque.

In these workshops we will cover all the basics of working in encaustic, including ways of fusing, the composition of encaustic paint and color mixing. We will also address correct working temperatures on heated palettes, appropriate working surfaces and studio set up.

Includes the use of all materials: paint and paintbrushes, boards to paint on, the use of heated palettes and heat guns. You will have time to complete at least one finished piece.

This workshop is led by artist Ahavani Mullen. Ahavani has been painting for over 20 years, and brings her experience with acrylic and oil painting to her current practice in encaustic painting. Ahavani is the recipient of a 2013 Professional Development Grant from the Illinois Arts Council. She has exhibited her work locally and nationally, and it is held in numerous private and public collections around the country.

Seven

Yea! Seven of my mini encaustic paintings on wood blocks were selected by Juror Shawn Hill, critic for Art New England for this exhibition which takes place alongside this years’ International Encaustic Conference. I am honored to be included among many greats in the world of encaustic painting. If you can’t make it out to gorgeous Provincetown, the link below has photos of all work included.
